Ikura is the Japanese term for salmon roe and is characterized by large, plump, orange eggs.
It’s sometimes called red caviar, as well. These large eggs have a soft texture, a briny flavor, and a mild fishiness. Ikura is also one of the healthier ingredients you can enjoy.
There are other types of fish roe used in Japanese cuisine, though ikura is one of the most common. Tobiko is the roe of flying fish and is a bright orange in color, Uni consists of sea urchin roe that is carefully removed from a sea urchin and can be eaten raw or cooked. This sea urchin roe is also quite popular in other areas. Countries that harvest Pacific salmon, which produce Red Caviar are: Japan, Russia, The United States, and Canada.
